BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - Prosecutors say a passenger in a vehicle hauling almost $1 million worth of methamphetamine to Houston has been sentenced to nearly 16 years in prison.

A federal judge in Brownsville on Monday sentenced 20-year-old Jaime Homero Guerrero. Jurors in January convicted Guerrero of conspiracy to possess and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Investigators say Guerrero, who’d been living in Brownsville and Matamoros, Mexico, was in a vehicle that was stopped in April 2013 near Raymondville for a traffic violation. Officers found about three dozen packages adding up to more than 50 pounds of methamphetamine.

Guerrero told authorities that he was heading from Matamoros to Houston for delivery of the vehicle.

The driver pleaded guilty in the drug-transporting case and awaits sentencing.
