ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Former Orlando police chief Val Demings says she is ending her campaign to become mayor of Orange County.
Demings announced the news in a statement Tuesday, thanking her supporters and adding that the bid for mayor is “just not the right race at this time.” She was trying to unseat incumbent Republican Mayor Teresa Jacobs. The nonpartisan primary is set for August.
Demings, a Democrat, entered the race in January on a public safety and education-improvement platform. She was also coming off her most-successful month of fund raising, raising more than $60,000 in April.
It is the second consecutive unsuccessful race for Demings. She narrowly lost her congressional challenge to GOP Rep. Daniel Webster in November 2012.
