ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The former Texas Rangers chief executive and U.S. ambassador who played a key role in getting their current ballpark built has been selected for the team’s Hall of Fame.
The Rangers said Tuesday that Tom Schieffer will be inducted as the hall’s 17th member on Aug. 23. He is the sixth person elected in a non-playing capacity.
Schieffer was an original investor in the ownership group with former President George W. Bush that purchased the Rangers in April 1989. Schieffer took charge of ballpark development the next year before the team and city of Arlington announced plans to build a new stadium through a public-private partnership. Rangers Ballpark in Arlington opened in 1994.
Schieffer was team president from 1991-99. He later served as U.S. ambassador to Australia and Japan.
