JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Alaska Democrats have endorsed Forrest Dunbar for U.S. House.

The 29-year-old is an Ivy League graduate and National Guard member. He’s making his first run for political office for the seat Republican Rep. Don Young had held since 1973. Young is seeking re-election.

Also seeking the Democratic nomination is perennial candidate Frank Vondersaar.

Dunbar considers himself a centrist, motivated to run because he doesn’t think Young is effective.

Young holds an advantage in campaign cash and name recognition. But Dunbar says he plans to travel the state, meeting with voters and pitching himself as a real alternative to Young.

Young spokesman Matt Shuckerow says Young’s record of representing Alaskans’ interests is clear. He says Young has passed more bills into law than any other House member.
