COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - State transportation officials say they’ll delay opening new lanes on Interstate 20 east of Columbia for about a month so they can fix a 1.5-mile stretch of highway just past the constriction zone.
The Department of Transportation says it now hopes to open all six lanes of I-20 on June 27. The original completion date was Saturday. Workers are widening 6 miles of I-20 starting at Interstate 77 and going east form four lanes to six lanes.
The transportation department says it will save money in the long run by extending the project to repair the highway and upgrade safety features from I-77 west to just before Exit 74.
Officials say even after the lanes open, crews will spend two more months to put the finishing touches on the highway.
