CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - A crash left a crossing guard dead and two young girls injured in Clearwater.

A preliminary investigation found that the driver of a Cadillac ran a red light at a high rate of speed Tuesday morning when it hit a Honda that spun through the intersection and hit 70-year-old Doug Carey.

The driver of the Cadillac fled the scene on foot, leaving behind two injured girls, ages 2 and 4. He was later arrested and is being questioned by police.

Police say the older child suffered multiple fractures and a possible head injury. The 2-year-old has minor injuries. Both are being treated at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.

The driver of the Honda was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Carey retired from the Clearwater Police Department in 1987.
