AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Augusta businessman Rick W. Allen is the Republican Party’s chosen candidate to take on Democratic Rep. John Barrow of Augusta this fall.

Allen defeated four Republican opponents in a GOP primary race Tuesday to avoid a runoff in the 12th District. Unofficial returns showed Allen with 53 percent of the vote with all but a few precincts reporting.

It’s a big win for Republicans who have made Barrow a top target in the midterm elections. No runoff will give Allen two extra months to raise money and focus on the fall campaign.

The race also included state Rep. Delvis Dutton of Glennville, former Senate candidate Eugene Yu of Evans, former Washington aide John Stone of Augusta and Macon nurse Dianne Vann.
