RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Gov. Pat McCrory is seeking a federal disaster declaration for four eastern North Carolina counties that suffered damage from tornadoes and severe storms.

McCrory said in a news release Friday that he’s seeking the declaration for Beaufort, Chowan, Pasquotank and Perquimans to help them recover from damage the storms caused April 25.

Initial reports indicate that more than 100 homes were destroyed or suffered major damage and 400 other homes suffered minor damage.

The disaster declaration would allow homeowners and business owners in the four counties and adjacent ones to apply for federal low-interest disaster loans or grants. The money from the loans can be used for repairs, medical bills, or rebuilding businesses.

Nine tornadoes swept through the state last Friday, killing one and injuring 28 others.
