PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Jason Day has decided not to compete in The Players Championship next week as he recovers from a thumb injury.

Day has only played one time since winning the Match Play Championship at the end of February, where he first injured his thumb. He played in the Masters, where he barely made the cut and tied for 20th.

The 26-year-old Australian had his left hand put in a cast as a precaution last week and hoped to return in time for the richest purse ($10 million) in golf. Now, it looks as though Day might not play again until the Memorial in Ohio, close to where he now lives.

Day is the No. 6 player in the world ranking.
