BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - One person was killed in a fiery accident involving four 18-wheelers that shut down traffic in both directions Friday night on Interstate 10 west of Baton Rouge.

The accident happened on part of the long elevated section of interstate highway known as the Basin Bridge. State police Trooper Greg Marchand (MAHR’-shan) said it happened shortly before 5 p.m. and the cause was under investigation. The lanes were still closed as of 9:30 p.m.

Trooper Stephen Hammons said the interstate was expected to remain closed all night and possibly into Saturday.

He said firefighters from at least two parishes were on the scene late Friday to be certain the fire was completely out.

Hammons said a trailer being hauled by one of the 18-wheelers went over the side of the bridge, while the cab remained on the bridge. The name of the person killed was not immediately released.

Marchand said no hazardous materials were found on the trucks.
