BARNEGAT TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - The owner of a wounded pit bull that was found wandering in traffic earlier this year is now facing charges in the case, along with his girlfriend and his father.

State police tell The Press of Atlantic City (https://bit.ly/1jOANPg) that 20-year-old Anthony Sammarco Jr. and his 22-year-old girlfriend, Alexis Abbato, were charged Monday with hindering an investigation. Sammarco’s 40-year-old father, Anthony Sr. of Barnegat, faces conspiracy charges.

A passing couple found the limping, bleeding dog on Route 9 in New Gretna in Burlington County on March 7. It had suffered a gunshot wound to the face.

The Sammarcos were being held in lieu of bail, while Abbato’s status was unclear. All three have previously denied any involvement in the shooting.
