HILO, Hawaii (AP) - The University of Hawaii at Hilo is getting its first endowed chair.
The university said Friday Hilo dentist and University of Hawaii at Manoa faculty member Patsy Fujimoto is donating $500,000 to establish an endowed professorship in honor of her former history professor.
The professorship will be named The David C. Purcell, Jr. Endowed Visiting Chair in History.
It will allow the school to bring distinguished historians to campus. It will also enable the college to increase its expertise in American, Asia-Pacific and European history.
Fujimoto attended Hilo and graduated from Manoa with a certificate in dental hygiene and a Bachelor of Arts in history.
Fujimoto took Purcell’s courses at Hilo. She says Purcell knew his material thoroughly and set very high standards for his students and himself.
