Southern ‘secede’ billboard removed in Alabama after complaints

A highway billboard with a Southern secession message only lasted a couple days before protests brought it down.

Following widespread complaints, the advertising company removed the sign which contained the word “secede” in capital letters. It had been posted Friday by the Confederate League of the South on a portion of Interstate 85 that runs through Montgomery, Ala., the Associated Press reported.

Lamar Advertising Co. pointed to the number of complaints it received as cause for removing the sign and said the organization had been offered a refund, AP said.

The Confederate League of the South, a nonprofit group that seeks secession from the United States, has been running an interstate billboard campaign at select spots in Southern states.
