NEW YORK (AP) - Federal and local authorities have busted a Bronx-based drug ring that they say supplied huge amounts of heroin to Connecticut and other northeastern states.
New York City’s Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget Brennan says the two suspected ring leaders, Edualin Tapia and Guillermo Esteban Margarin, were nabbed on Friday as they allegedly drove boxes of heroin to Hartford, Connecticut.
Tapia and Margarin were arrested on charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance and conspiracy. It wasn’t clear if the Bronx men had lawyers. Both remain in custody in Hartford and await extradition to New York.
Authorities say the six-month investigation resulted in the seizure of 53 pounds of heroin, worth $11 million, 20 pounds of cocaine, three guns, including two assault rifles, and $85,000 in cash.
