BERLIN (AP) - Chancellor Angela Merkel plans to attend Germany’s opening World Cup match against Portugal.

Merkel tells the Leipziger Volkszeitung newspaper she wishes coach Joachim Loew and his players “six more matches” in Brazil after that - which would mean advancing to the World Cup final.

Germany’s opening match against Portugal is on June 16 in Salvador.

Merkel has often attended Germany matches at major tournaments.
