SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a 35-year-old man was participating in a 12-hour endurance challenge when he was fatally struck by a car while walking along a suburban Syracuse road.

Troopers say Jeffrey Proietti of Syracuse was walking with 15 other people on the right-hand shoulder of State Fair Boulevard in the town of Geddes when he was hit from by behind around 6:45 a.m. Saturday.

He was taken to a Syracuse hospital where he was pronounced dead. No one else was injured.

Troopers say the 38-year-old woman driving the car pulled over at the scene. She hasn’t been charged.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports that Proietti was the father of three children, including one just a few months old. He was walking with a group participating in a military-style endurance event.
