MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - A liberal think tank says Vermont’s employment picture is close to having rebounded back to pre-recession levels.

The Public Assets Institute issued a statement following Friday’s news from the state Department of Labor that Vermont’s unemployment rate had dropped a tenth of a point in April to 3.3 percent.

It says that Vermont is nearly back to its 2008 levels - with 308,000 non-farm jobs.

The group has been saying for months that Vermont’s unemployment rate was deceptively low, and didn’t take into account many people who had become discouraged and stopped looking for work.

It says the percentage of unemployed Vermonters who have been out of work more than 26 weeks has grown from 16 percent in 2006 to nearly 25 percent now.
