SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The wife of an inmate is facing charges after officials said she was found having sex with her husband on the grounds of the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls.
State corrections officials on Monday said Rebecca Bordeaux, 28, was arrested Saturday on charges of trespassing and intent to deliver unauthorized articles to an inmate, which is a felony punishable by up to two years in prison. She remained jailed Monday and it wasn’t clear whether she had an attorney yet.
Secretary of Corrections Denny Kaemingk said the incident happened in an unsecured area of the penitentiary where inmates on community service are allowed. Kaemingk said the couple was found in a wood pile that is used by Native American inmates for sweat lodges. Another inmate was found with the couple.
The men have been placed on disciplinary segregation while authorities investigate. Officials would not identify them.
“(The inmates) go out from the facility to work at various places in the community, for nonprofits or other government entities,” Kaemingk said. Bordeaux’s husband is serving time for a third-degree simple assault charge.
The state’s Division of Criminal Investigation has been notified and will determine whether the inmates should face additional charges.
Warden Darin Young said staff found the woman and the inmates shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday on the southwest end of the facility after a citizen reported a woman “looking suspicious” on the penitentiary’s grounds.
Officers from the Sioux Falls Police Department found several packs of cigarettes and cough and cold pills in Bordeaux’s bag. The Sioux Falls woman remains in custody at the Minnehaha County Jail.
