FORT ANN, N.Y. (AP) - New York State Police released the names of the two people who survived a sky-diving accident after jumping out of an airplane at 9,000 feet.
Troopers say 35-year-old Georgi Reed of Ballston Spa was jumping in tandem Sunday afternoon with instructor Scott Smith of South Glens Falls, owner of Adirondack Skydiving Adventures in Washington County.
Police say the 47-year-old Smith deployed his drogue chute at about 6,000 feet but it immediately wrapped around his arm. The drogue chute is designed to pull out a skydiver’s main chute.
Smith’s main parachute and his reserve failed to open properly as they plummeted but the partially inflated reserve chute caused them to spiral, slowing their fall until they hit some trees near a golf course and land on the ground.
Reed and Smith escaped with just minor injuries.
