WELDON SPRING, Mo. (AP) - The Army Reserve Center in Weldon Spring has been named after a 27-year-old soldier killed in Iraq.
The center was named Saturday for Sgt. Melvin Y. Mora, a physics student at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He enlisted in the Army Reserve in 1998 and was deployed to Iraq in April 2004 with the Reserve’s 245th Maintenance Company.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/1qN2lhz ) he was killed in 2004 in a mortar attack north of Baghdad. Mora was awarded several medals after his death, including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
Maj. Greg Borah of Shelbyville, Illinois, was Mora’s platoon leader in Iraq. He says naming the center for Mora is a “fitting tribute to a soldier who meant a lot to the soldiers he served with.”
