TRINIDAD, Colo. (AP) - Descendants of coal miners who went on strike against John D. Rockefeller will be among those gathering for another ceremony remembering the 100th anniversary of the Ludlow Massacre.
Two nephews of slain Greek-American labor leader Louis Tikas plan to attend Sunday’s ceremony at the Ludlow Memorial National Historic Site in southern Colorado.
It’s organized by the United Mine Workers of America, which helped the miners during their long strike. On April 20, 1914, 11 children and two women died in a fire that followed a shootout between the Colorado National Guard and strikers at the Ludlow tent camp. Ten others were killed in the battle and aftermath, including Tikas.
The deaths set off 10 days of civil war and are credited for drawing national attention to the poor working conditions of the mainly immigrant miners.
