HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - The Garland County Sheriff’s Office says one person was shot when two men knocked on a resident’s door asking to use a phone because their car broke down.

Lt. James Martin says deputies were called to the home about 11:45 p.m. Saturday.

Martin says a man at the home went outside to help when he was shot by one or both of the men seeking help. The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was in life-threatening condition.

Martin says authorities don’t believe the act was random.

Police have not released any names. The suspects are not in custody and the incident remains under investigation.
