SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is launching a radio campaign to promote boating safety with spots in English and Spanish.

Department Director Marc Miller says the goal is making the 2014 boating season the safest since 1964, when accident statistics started being collected.

The radio ads will remind listeners to always wear life jackets while boating.

Last year, 14 deaths and 50 injuries were attributed to boating accidents on Illinois waters. Fatalities have declined from an average of 46 a year in the 1960s to 19 annually since 2000.

The Department of Natural Resources says much of the drop in the number of fatalities is because of tougher laws and the availability of safety education classes.
