SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Utility crews have replaced 4,000 feet of copper cable in South Bend as they continue working to restore power to the city’s downtown area following an underground electrical fire.
Indiana Michigan Power executive Tom Kratt tells the South Bend Tribune (https://bit.ly/1gSlOUA ) crews will focus Saturday on splicing the cables into place in hopes of restoring power by noon Sunday.
Thursday’s fire cut power to more than 800 downtown South Bend homes and businesses as thousands of people are in town for the University of Notre Dame’s weekend commencement ceremonies. The Notre Dame campus wasn’t affected by the outage and was planning no changes to its commencements.
But the school urged visitors in town for the commencement ceremonies to check with hotels and restaurants to ensure those establishments remain open.
