JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Millsaps College leaders are traveling to Africa to connect with academic and cultural groups, including a charity started by a recent graduate.

President Robert W. Pearigen (PAIR-uh-jen) and academic dean Keith Dunn leave Saturday for 12 days in Tanzania and Rwanda.

Millsaps says they will tour Songea (Son-GEE-uh)-Mississippi, a private group that promotes cultural exchanges between the southern regions of the U.S. and Tanzania. Millsaps anthropology and sociology Professor Julian Murchison co-directs the group, along with Tanzanian colleague Damas D. Ndumbaro (Dum-BAR-ro).

In Rwanda, Pearigen and Dunn will participate in a ceremony honoring Isaro (ee-SAW-ro) Foundation, a nonprofit group that works to improve children’s literacy. Jean Leon Iragena (Irajena), a 2014 Millsaps graduate from Rwanda, established the foundation in October 2011 with help from Millsaps students and faculty.
