BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - The state Public Service Commission says North Dakotans prefer cell phones but the number of traditional wired telephones has risen for the first time in a decade.
The PSC says there are 258,152 landlines in North Dakota. That’s up nearly 2,200 over last year.
The number of wireless phones currently in use in North Dakota is 521,578. Regulators say the number of cell phones has increased 76 percent increase in the past decade.
The number of cell phone lines exceeded the number of landlines in 2006.
The PSC gathers data on wireless accounts and traditional phone lines to calculate a tax on each line. Collections from the monthly tax, which is now 4 cents per line, pays for a telephone relay service that is used by the deaf.
