NEW YORK (AP) - Mayor Bill de Blasio is announcing his choice to lead New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission.
The mayor is nominating urban planner Meenakshi Srinivasan (mee-NAHK’-shee shree-neeh-VAH’-suhn).
She has spent the last decade running the city’s Board of Standards and Appeals, an agency that makes zoning decisions.
She also spent 14 years at the Department of City Planning.
The commission is tasked with balancing the mayor’s pro-development agenda while preserving the city’s history.
The commission has previously drawn criticism from the real estate industry. Designating neighborhoods as historic districts increases government oversight and can slow development.
The City Council must approve de Blasio’s choice.
The nomination was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
