NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Newport officials are searching for descendants of the city’s founders and they prepare to mark its 375th anniversary.

Stephen Waluk, the co-chairman of celebration’s planning committee, tells the Newport Daily News (https://bit.ly/IX5CGL ) the descendants are needed for a recreation of the signing of the Newport Compact in 1639 by those nine settlers.

When the city celebrated its 350th anniversary in 1989, 61 people participated in a similar ceremony.

Waluk says they have found about 15 people this time around and are looking for more.

The signing ceremony is slated for May 24.
