HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Marshall University’s medical school has received initial accreditation for a psychiatry residency training program beginning in 2015.
The announcement was made Thursday by Dr. Joseph I. Shapiro, dean of the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. The approval comes from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the national body responsible for post-M.D. training programs in the United States.
The four-year program will train up to four residents a year for a total of 16 resident physicians at capacity.
Shapiro says the program allows the school to continue its mission of educating a physician work force for central Appalachia. He noted that physicians tend to practice in the geographic area where they complete their residency, which means more doctors for the region.
