SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The city of Lehi will be implementing watering restrictions this summer to avoid a shortage.

The Utah County city is limiting the hours and days people can use outdoor irrigation systems starting on June 1. They are also prohibiting washing of hard surfaces.

Lehi is a city of 51,000 about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City.

Cities across the West have mandated water restrictions or asked residents to voluntarily cut back on water use to avoid shortages. Much of the West is in some stage of drought, ranging from abnormal to exceptional.

Some restrictions take effect automatically each year, while others depend on the forecast and the amount of precipitation the region has received.
