MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Two weeks after lawmakers made Vermont the first state to call for a constitutional amendment to reverse recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings on campaign spending, Sen. Patrick Leahy has announced he’ll hold a Senate hearing on the issue.
The Senate Judiciary Committee chairman says the Supreme Court’s McCutcheon and Citizens United decisions open the flood gates to money from wealthy donors seeking to influence the political process.
The hearing Leahy says he’ll hold in June will look at a proposed amendment that would allow Congress and the states to limit campaign spending.
Vermont lawmakers passed a resolution two weeks ago addressing the same issue.
