LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A Louisville high school’s site based council has decided to add gender identity to its non-discrimination policy.

The Courier-Journal (https://cjky.it/1mzZ8h0) reports the vote Thursday night to amend the policy came after several people spoke for and against the change. It was sparked by the decision of Atherton High School Principal Thomas Aberli to allow a transgender student to use the girls’ restroom and locker room. The student was born male but identifies as female.

Some parents and community members opposed the change, expressing concerns about students’ privacy.

Michael Aldridge, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky, says the council’s approval “helps these students know their rights are protected.”
