DETROIT (AP) - Detroit plans to start work soon on a pilot project to rescue and sell parts of deteriorating homes before demolishing them.
The Detroit News reports (https://bit.ly/1owwb7X ) the deconstruction project will solicit bids from teams to salvage reusable flooring, fixtures and moldings in 10 vacant buildings in one city neighborhood.
The practice of dismantling by hand of reusable building materials from existing homes has been done by groups for years in the Detroit area, but the pilot project would integrate the practice with city demolitions.
The plan is part of Mayor Mike Duggan’s efforts to eliminate blight and stabilize neighborhoods. City officials this week announced plans to expand an online auction of vacant houses. Detroit has struggled for years with vacant homes and buildings, and thousands of them have been razed.
