GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - A financial adviser says a budget deficit and serious cash-flow problems could force tough choices in the Carroll County School District.
The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (https://bit.ly/1gsH8Fx ) that options could include a tax increase or a reduction in staffing.
The state Department of Education sent the adviser, Bo Surrell, to investigate the local district’s finances. He says most of the district’s money goes toward paying teachers, so the fastest way to save money would be to eliminate some jobs.
Carroll County School District Superintendent Billy Joe Ferguson says he has been asking county supervisors to raise taxes for two years.
Mimi Alldread, the district’s business manager, says local tax collections have decreased since 2007.
