BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - A dedication ceremony is planned for a 16-foot-tall lighthouse on the banks of the Mississippi River in Burlington.

The Hawk Eye newspaper reports (https://bit.ly/1oXeCeD ) the lighthouse was installed three weeks ago to honor the memory of four people who died in a boating accident two years ago and to remind boaters to be safe.

A group called River Rats Safety and Awareness formed after the accident, and on Saturday morning members will dedicate the lighthouse.

As part of the event, Iowa Department of Natural Resources employees will offer free boat inspections from 1 to 3 p.m. near the boat ramps, north of the Port of Burlington.

The 950-pound lighthouse is a replica of a 19th century lighthouse. It has a 5-foot octagonal base and a “glow light” atop the tower.
