DETROIT (AP) - The author of a book about Detroit’s Capitol Park will be telling tales about the public space.
Author and Michigan Historical Commission President Jack Dempsey will speak Friday evening and sign copies of his book, “Capitol Park: Historic Heart of Detroit.”
The park is where Stevens T. Mason, Michigan’s first governor, is buried. Mason was elected the Michigan territory’s first governor in 1835, when the capitol was still in Detroit.
According to the book, it’s the nation’s only city park where a state’s first governor is buried.
The talk will be held at Mackenzie House, which is part of the Wayne State University Historic District. It’s the headquarters for Preservation Detroit, which hosts monthly lectures.
The event is open to the public. Admission is a $5 suggested donation.
