WESTPORT, Mass. (AP) - Officials in Westport have filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer of chemical contaminants found in the town’s middle school in an effort to recover the costs of the chemicals’ removal.
Town Administrator Jack Healey said the suit against St. Louis, Missouri-based Monsanto Co. and its corporate successors seeks “$3 million and counting.” He says quarterly PCB monitoring alone costs $50,000 per year.
The attorney representing the town and school district tells The Herald News (https://bit.ly/1n0L4M5 ) there is evidence from other cases that the company was aware of the health impacts of PCBs and other districts are dealing with PCB contamination.
PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, have been linked to cancer.
A Monsanto spokesman says the lawsuit is without merit and the use of PCBs was required by building codes in many places.
