MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Enhanced 911 board says Sprint customers can now use their mobile phones to send text messages to 911 for help.

E911 Executive Director David Tucker says the addition of Sprint as a text-to-911 provider is especially important for those with speech or hearing impairments.

The Vermont 911 Board has worked to establish text-to-911 since early 2012.

Wireless customers in Vermont using text-to-911 should only use the texting option only when calling 911 is not possible.

Customers should always include clear location information because emergency personnel will not be able to determine location information for a customer sending a text message to 911.

Customers must be inside Sprint’s “home” wireless network coverage in Vermont.
