MARBLEMOUNT, Wash. (AP) - North Cascades National Park rangers on a chartered helicopter recovered the body Thursday of a Seattle man who was killed in an avalanche on Mount Shuksan.

Ranger Rosemary Seifried (SY’-freed) identified the victim as 46-year-old John Cooper IV. His body was turned over to the Whatcom County medical examiner’s office.

Cooper was on a day trip with a skiing partner Wednesday when he was hit by the snow slide and swept more than 2,000 feet over a cliff. The partner, a 37-year-old Seattle man, narrowly avoided the avalanche and called for help.

Mount Shuksan is a 9,000-foot peak just east of Mount Baker. It is often featured on calendars and photographed from Picture Lake off Highway 542.
