NEW YORK (AP) - An NYPD oversight panel says it will look into incidents where officers are accused of improperly interfering with bystanders who videotape arrests.
The Wall Street Journal (https://on.wsj.com/1k4nS07 ) says the Civilian Complaint Review Board will examine if officers get appropriate training in how to handle those situations.
It is legal for bystanders to record police making arrests but board member Tosano Simonetti says officers sometimes ignore the rule in the heat of the moment.
It’s not immediately known how many of the board’s 2,545 open cases involve such situations.
The board may issue recommendations to the NYPD depending on its conclusions.
A department spokesman says while bystanders are allowed to record arrests they are not permitted to block traffic or try to interfere.
