MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) - A suburban Detroit man has been sentenced to 18 months of probation in the beating of his elderly mother in a motel parking lot when she refused to let him use her car.

The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens reports (https://bit.ly/1hNrvTO ) 36-year-old Thomas Gulas of Eastpointe also was ordered Wednesday to undergo inpatient substance-abuse treatment. He earlier pleaded no contest to aggravated domestic violence and malicious destruction of property.

He apologized in court.

Evelyn Gulas was beaten and knocked to the ground in September outside a motel in Roseville, north of Detroit. She was 77 at the time of the assault and suffered head and face injuries. She says she wanted her son to get help, not to be incarcerated.

Thomas Gulas already has been jailed more than six months.
