TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A hearing on legislation reforming New Jersey’s bail laws has been postponed.
The hearing had been scheduled for Thursday in the Assembly Judiciary Committee.
One reform being considered would provide a non-monetary alternative to non-violent suspects who remain incarcerated only because they can’t afford bail.
Assemblyman John Burzichelli, a South Jersey Democrat who is sponsoring the proposal, says the bill is still being worked on but has wide support.
Republican Gov. Chris Christie has proposed bail reforms that include ridding prisons and jails of low-level, non-violent drug suspects while denying bail to suspects accused of committing extremely violent or heinous crimes.
A Senate bill that has been referred to the budget committee incorporates both reforms.
