LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is encouraging people to lower U.S. flags to half-staff in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day.
President Barack Obama has proclaimed that Thursday is Peace Officers Memorial Day and he also says American flags be lowered to half-staff. The day is part of national Police Week and memorial events are planned for a number of Michigan communities.
In a statement, Snyder says officers “work tirelessly every day to protect our citizens” and the day honors those who “gave their lives for the public good.” He asks that people keep fallen officers and their family and friends in their thoughts and prayers.
Flags should be returned to full-staff at sunset on Thursday.
