FERNDALE, Mich. (AP) - A Detroit-area rock singer has written a novel, a thriller set in Michigan.

Josh Malerman’s “Bird Box” was released this week. The Ferndale-based author also fronts and writes songs for The High Strung.

“Bird Box” takes place in an apocalyptic near-future world and opens with a woman and her two children making their way down a river in a rowboat while blindfolded.

Malerman’s publisher, Ecco, says “Bird Box” has been optioned by Universal Pictures.

A book tour is scheduled to take Malerman to Lansing on Thursday, Grand Rapids on Friday and Ann Arbor on Tuesday.
