Virginia Senator Creigh Deeds said Thursday he plans to sue a local community services board over treatment his son, Gus, received shortly before he violently attacked the senator and then killed himself.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that Mr. Deed’s lawyer, Monica Mroz, said the senator filed a notice of intent to sue to four local governments that are served by the Rockbridge Area Community Services Board as well as the Board itself.
Last November, Gus went to the facility seeking psychiatric treatment but employees turned him away, saying they were unable to locate an available bed.
Shortly after Gus stabbed his father then committed suicide.
State investigators later found that some nearby beds were indeed available.
Ms. Mroz told reporters that Mr. Deeds has not decided if he will formally sue but is preserving his rights under state law.
