NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Comedian Aziz Ansari has been given permission to tell jokes in Newport late into the evening, but not as late as he had planned.

The Newport Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/IX5CGL ) the city council on Wednesday voted 3-2 to allow the Newport Yachting Center to stay open until 10:30 p.m. on July 31st. That will allow two shows by the stand-up comedian who also stars on the TV show “Parks and Recreation.”

Neighbors complained that shows would be too noisy and expose children walking by on Commercial Wharf to the comedian’s profane language.

The shows had been scheduled to end at 11:15 p.m., but the council voted to extend the normal 9:30 p.m. closing time only by an hour.

The center says it is spending about $100,000 to install noise barriers.
