OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Athletics have acquired outfielder and first baseman Kyle Blanks from the San Diego Padres in exchange for minor league outfielder Jake Goebbert and a player to be named.

The A’s announced the trade Thursday and said Blanks would join the team Friday in Cleveland. He played parts of six seasons for San Diego, batting .200 in five games this year.

To clear roster space, Oakland designated longest-tenured player Daric Barton for assignment. The first baseman was hitting .158 with five RBIs and 14 strikeouts.

If Barton clears waivers and stays with the organization, he could join Triple-A Sacramento for his eighth different season.
