LOS ANGELES (AP) - Southern California has sweltered through another day of record-breaking heat.
Los Angeles International Airport recorded 97 degrees at 11 a.m. Thursday. The previous record for the day of 94 was set in 1970.
Downtown Los Angeles tied a 1970 record of 101.
The city says electrical demand set a May record, peaking at around 5,500 megawatts as folks turned up their air conditioners.
In Central California, Santa Maria airport’s high was 105, beating the 1970 high of 100.
This week’s heat wave was accompanied by Santa Ana winds that drove home-destroying wildfires.
The National Weather Service says the winds have shifted and much of the region will see slightly cooler weather on Friday - but it will still be hot, and the mountains will continue to have extreme fire danger.
