LOS LUNAS, N.M. (AP) - A New Mexico State Police officer who authorities said choked a man attempting to repossess his vehicle has resigned.
Charles Vernier wrote in a letter sent Monday that he was stepping down from his position to focus on his mental health.
The letter was addressed to New Mexico State Police Chief Pete Kassetas and other high-ranking officers.
Los Lunas police arrested Vernier earlier this month at an apartment complex after officers found him restraining a tow truck operator in a chokehold. After Vernier was ordered several times to time the man go, police say he ran from officers but was handcuffed after he fell a short distance away.
He was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and interference with a police.
