WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Nearly 130 members of a South Carolina Army National Guard engineering unit have returned home after a year in Afghanistan.
Members of the 1223rd Engineer Company returned to West Columbia on Wednesday and were greeted by friends and family.
The unit had spent about 10 days in Fort Bliss, Texas, for end-of-deployment processing before returning home.
In Afghanistan, the engineers tore down some 15 military outposts that supported U.S. and allied troops prior to their withdrawals from Afghanistan.
Guard commander Maj. Gen. Robert Livingston says the unit performed superbly during its operations, never missing a deadline and often completing its work up to 10 days ahead of schedule.
The two-star general says the engineers were recognized as the top unit in a brigade composed of 18 companies.
